Lucio Fulci's contraband is worth a look

I'm not even sold on the whole hi-def thing. I don't need to see movie quality that's better then my eyesight. So, yeah, I like watching horror flicks with scratches and imperfections on them. I love that grittiness it gives the film and VHS is a prime example of doing so.

i understand the appeal of grain - but i also appreciate seeing a movie without tracking problems and actually being able to see what the hell is going on when someone's being chased through the woods with an axe - or in a dark dorm hallway.

if i wanted suspense without being able to see anything - i'd listen to old radio programs :)

Couldn't have said it better.

I have over 1,000 movies on VHS, and I'm scared to even try playing the things. I don't want to know which ones do and don't work.

The Valachi Papers with Charles Bronson is worth a look. :)

I think the one i managed to get is OOP now, might have to pay up if you really want it.

DeVuL 01-13-2009 08:21 PM

I still got a shit load of VHS... I just can't seem to part with them... I just buy movies on DVD I don't have on VHS and I have other people buy me the ones I do have on VHS for like xmas/birthday and I just give them to my mom cuz she can't afford dvds lol....

my family is sooo jealous of my movie collection, it's funny...

The films are very cool. Matt C makes an alternative slasher villain. Bruce Campbell is in the first two films, but he's not in the third part as his character dies in part 2. Robert Davi plays Matt's nemesis. If you don't know, Matt is a zombie cop who is out for revenge.
...Anything else you'd like to spoil while you're at it?
I honestly wonder why some people just don't think more...a little more.
C'mon

haha. yeah man. i'm always finding old vhs horror movies at pawn shops and going crazy over them and people just think i'm nuts hahahaha. sometimes i just keep it old with some things like horror and 70s films that i collect.

Haha, yeah, Slaughter High is cheesy fun.

The original Black Christmas (by Bob Clark) is a great, under-appreciated slasher.

nicklord1 01-15-2009 01:20 AM

yeah i agree black christmas was cool

I've seen Hell Night...and would advise against it.

It starts out very promising, but goes down hill incredibly fast. A boring waste of time, don't bother with it.

One that I'd suggest is an ultra-low budget flick called Dr. Chopper. It's far from a masterpiece, but it was way better than I had expected. Wouldn't really suggest that you go out of your way searching for it, but if you happen to stumble across it somewhere it's worth a look.

lyricist 01-15-2009 09:47 AM

i loved hell night. read they are making a remake(i'm sure it will be pg-13) but i thought it was pretty good. since hell night was mentioned, what about linda blair's other "classic"(haha) GROTESQE?

zwoti 01-15-2009 10:32 AM

there's a few "don't" movies, variable quality.

Doc Faustus 01-15-2009 10:57 AM

Savage Weekend. It's so perverse it's gorgeous.

Hi all i was wondering which of his films where the best and the least slow. As i find itallian giallo a tad on the boring side.

Cheers

daninsky 01-31-2009 09:17 AM

I love Argentos gialli but if you don't you might want to check out:

Suspiria
Inferno
Mother of tears
Phenomena
The Rope and the Colt (Cemetery without crosses)
Once Upon a Time in the West
Today We Kill, Tomorrow We Die!

The four first once are horror movies while the others are westerns. He has not directed the western, he is only the writer. The four first he has directed.

fortunato 01-31-2009 09:41 AM

Suspiria, definitely.

You might want to check out Tenebre as well. It's a great giallo with a quicker pace than most.

Doc Faustus 01-31-2009 09:46 AM

I'd recommend Opera. It's pretty much wall to wall with tension and violence.

nicklord1 01-31-2009 10:06 AM

cheers shall add to my list .

What was deep red like

DEEP RED is a classic, but if you find gialli to be a tad slow, you probably won't dig that one.

OPERA
TENEBRE
STENDHAL SYNDROME

and one film he produced DEMONS is profoundly wierd and awesome

and of course his new one GIALLO will be an action-packed, thrill-a-minute horror extravaganza that promises not only to entertain, but also to increase your quality of life, raise you IQ points, improve your skills with the opposite sex, help you drop those ten extra pounds and whiten your smile

Hm, should be pretty good. :D

Elvis_Christ 02-01-2009 02:57 PM

I back the recommendations of Opera, Tenebre and Mother Of Tears. Definitely give Sleepless a day in court because its brilliant.

Stay away from the Americanized shit like Trauma and The Card Player.

Plaguewind 02-01-2009 04:52 PM

Though I wouldn't advise you to stay away from Trauma and The Card Player, I do think they're inferior...

My fav ones, on the other hands, are definitely Suspiria, Phenomena and Stendhal Syndrome.

Silencio 02-02-2009 08:18 AM

"Suspiria" is not only Argento's finest work, but it's just one of the best movies I've ever seen. From what I've seen, "Deep Red" and "The Bird With Crystal Plumage" come the closest to that masterpiece.

Silencio 02-02-2009 08:21 AM

I think Mario Bava's one of the greatest directors who ever lived, and he's my personal favourite. His movies were moving paintings, works of art brought to life. The cinematography in some of his films, especially "Hatchet For the Honeymoon", are some of the best in film history.

How I'd rank his films...

1. "Black Sabbath" (1963)
2. "Hatchet For the Honeymoon" (1969)
3. "Black Sunday" (1960)
4. "Shock" (1977)

Roderick Usher 02-02-2009 12:51 PM

Mostly stuff from Demoni which Argento produced, but didn't direct - but still really fun.

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...ideoid=7990826

it's some of Sergio Stivaletti's best stuff

Elvis_Christ 02-02-2009 03:58 PM

Suspiria is a mess IMO it all falls to pieces after a great opening.

creepycrawler23 02-04-2009 11:15 AM
