Re-Animator.

As a poor man's La Jetee, 12 Monkeys doesn't work that well.

oh i disagree- i loved the original but 12 monkeys is awesome and arguably gilliam's best

12 MONKEYS

The_Return 09-24-2008 06:51 PM

I've got to track down La Jetée...I thought 12 Monkeys was brilliant.

That said, Re-Animator still gets my vote - pure entertainment from start to finish.

I can't vote for a non-sci fi film in a sci fi tournament, so Mad Max it is.

Before the tourney began, I sent out PMs to 10 random HDC members and asked if Donnie Darko should be included under Sci-Fi.

All 10 answered yes. And it has won its way to Round 5 too.

6-1, Mad Max has a strong lead over Donnie Darko.

More votes needed to decide this one...

urgeok2 09-25-2008 08:12 AM

i consider DD to be sci-fi ... no matter what else it involves time travel..

science + fiction

Agreed. Wormholes hardly make for "Non-scifi" material

Oh, and My vote goes to Donnie Darko

BTW, out of the two, Mad Max is way less sci fi. its set in the near-future and has some bad-ass cars, but aside from that, it is the story of a cop who stops a bad guy and gets his family murdered as a result, then gets revenge. The general setting makes it sci-fi and nothing else.

Time travel does not neccessarily science fiction make. The Once and Future King by T.H. White includes a time traveling character. Does that make it a science fiction book? Time travel in Donnie Darko is not presented in a scientific manner. It's presented more as a magical act. The book he reads is The PHILOSOPHY of Time Travel.

There's a vast difference in the way time travel is presented in Donnie Darko & The Time Machine. I love Donnie Darko- I just can't vote for it as sci fi.
