Oh! And I watched this great Nick Zedd film yesterday called They Eat Scum (1979). It's loooow budget, super fun, with a great angry and bizarre DIY aesthetic via Buńuel or something.
Elvis, have you checked this one out? |
Nah man I haven't it looks great so I'll be sprting myself out with a copy ASAP.

Tetro (2009)
http://l.yimg.com/eb/ymv/us/img/hv/p...mallposter.jpg Francis Ford Coppola's new intense family drama. Though I was expecting something more from the story but I'm still highly recommending it for its stunning piece of camera works & magical use of lights & shadows. Coppola beautifully shot the film in Black & White format where all the flashbacks comes in color. There are some criticisms as Vincent Gallo played the title role but I think he did a fine credible job. And the young actor Alden Ehrenreich, played Tetro's younger brother 'Bennie' all the time reminding me of Leonardo DiCaprio...mainly with his eyes & smiles...there are pretty much similarities between them in look actually. >>: A- The Graves (2009/2010) http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/1152/thegraves.jpg A pretty weak entry for this year's After Dark Horror Fest with having Tony Todd & Bill Moseley in the cast. Though it actually deserves a solid "D" or hardly a "D+" but I like to give it a "C-" just for the Bill Moseley's part & for that hot chick Clare Grant...the only watchable things in this movie. >>: C- Legion (2010) http://l.yimg.com/eb/ymv/us/img/hv/p...mallteaser.jpg >>: B |
"Dark country" 5/10
I guess most of the low budget went to the Hollywood actors involved. What we get is a newly maried couple driving through the desert in the middle of the night. For 1 and a half hour. Sure they hit somebody along the way and then pic him up. Turns out he's a weirdo. Things gets weird and violent and more and more fucked and in the end we get a twist ending. But all in all Dark Country is two people driving through a desert in the middle of the night.. Would've worked well as a short. |

Horrible acting and dialogue, and... Why do most of the infected people in this movie walk around with poo on their faces?? |

12 Angry Men (1957). i can see why this is one of Roshiq's favs, if not No.#1. This classic is nigh perfect if not so. 12 Angry Men takes place almost solely in one room, the jury room. The stifling heat only adds to the symbolism of the boiling emotions as these men decide the fate of a young man. This great character study beautifully typifies the hidden agendas as well as the inculcated notions as instilled into man by culture. We have bigotry, boredom, apathy, insecurity, peer pressure, repressed anger, alienation, arogance,... Well, you get the idea. There is one scene that absolutely portrays the power of man's social nature so wonderfully that it was chilling. And those closeup shots at the end-kudos. All in all a movie deserving the moniker of a classic. Bad Lieutenant (1992). Thankfully, this movie was only around 96 minutes or so, because i could not have taken any more. That said, Harvey Keitel really portrayed a rather bad cop in this disturbing flick. In fact, Keitel's performance was nothing short of brilliant. Flip flopping from rage to blatant opportunism to heartfelt bouts of angst and despondency, one can say that this whole flick hung on Harvey's performance, and he came though big time. This was not an entertaining nor a fun movie, but an important movie nonetheless. The story itself was a perfect mess, pretty much a snapshot out of an anti-hero's last couple of days in a deep downward spiral, but it somehow tightened up just in time to take a mess of a story and turn it into art. Abel Ferrara's direction was incredible, extracting every ounce of Keitel's talent and deftly capturing it onto film. As a punch-gut movie, it was sheer brilliance. Mercie beaucoup. d |
Watched Zombie Apocalypse last night not very good at all.

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
Nothing short of atrocious. The premise of this film is almost intruiging, but Gray's laughable direction and the cringe-worthy script/acting combination make this film worthless. The thing stinks of non-sensical self-righteousness, boasting a character who is too victimized to be a villain and too cruel to be hero; this makes Gerard Butler's character simply that- a character, totally unfit for social commentay or tragic sympathy. The film goes from bad to worse as Butler starts preying on people we're supposed to believe are guilty, and the story becomes more and more presumptuous as it assumes we are blindly following its radical anarchy. I wasn't. Under the Roofs of Paris (1930) A whimsical "love story" that exhibits Clair's signature mix of hysterical cinematic comedy and pathos. It is also an exemplary piece of sound cinema, which is no surprise- I don't think it would be unreasonable to call Clair the first great film sound artist. This story is wonderfully unconventional and even takes some strange dramatic turns, but the characters (as they usually do in a Clair film) keep our attention and demand our sentiment- or at least our curiosity. I'm not sure whether I liked the ending- I'm still mulling over its surprising twist- but I loved watching the transition between Clair's silent cinema and his sound cinema, and the in-between he liked to occupy at this stage of his career. The Hurt Locker (2009) An incredible war film which has garnered deserved praise for both its barbaric realism and exciting action. Bigelow has always been a director of enormous talent, and I am glad to see her find a real gem in this script, a story that lets her utlize her eye for movement and her delightful sense of humor.Using the Iraq war as a backdrop, she explores intense psychological questions without attempting pretentious answers. The cast is one of the best parts of this film- Mackie, Fiennes, Pearce, and especially Jeremy Renner- these are actors of extraordinary power who find real motivation in these parts. The key to the film's success is the way it uses these actors not as pawns or political ideologies, as most contemporary war films do, but as human beings. The violence which occurs is not a result of war as an event but as a result of the people who participate in it. The intensity of an event is only as big as the people who cause it, and Bigelow allows us to see cause and effect relationships, both minor and catastrophic, in a reasonable and unpolitical way. Black Dynamite (2009) I haven't had a good laugh in a while, and 'Black Dynamite' gave me the opportunity to laugh at and with a handful of people who know blaxploitation well- and who see all the treasures along with all of the pitfalls to the extinct genre that gave the seventies so much soul. Chalk this up to intelligence; though the film may come across as dumb fun, director Scott Sanders and actor Michael Jai White know exactly what they're doing, and they do it well. The sexism and racism the genre once knew is here parodied and satired, and the result is an exquisite commentary and entertainment- the kind we thought too distant for recovery. One-liners, boom mics and afros abound, this is a tremendous success- let's hope for a sequel! |
Black Dynamite was awesome. A virtual orgy of one-liners.

The Warriors What a perfect living room double bill. Can't wait til mid March to do it on the big screen. |
The House of the Devil (2009). Ti West did this 80s horror tribute with aplomb. Taking his time, he effectively creates an impending sense of doom around every corner, but where most of those same corners are in fact rather prosaic. In taking his time, the horror fan must be patient and let Ti do his job, which includes letting us get to know the lead actress so that when she faces her fate, it happens to a character that we now know and care about. There are no cheap scares or ripped off scenes here, but instead a mounting sense of apprehension as to how our little horror flick is going to play out, all the while fearful that we may just get caught off guard. The acting was quite solid, and 80s genre feel was perfect. Go high-waisted jeans! The story itself was nice and simple, but within that simplicity are hidden gems that things are not quite right. Shot with a gritty feel, the choice of film worked out well. Lastly, the score was awesome in its own right. All in all a solid entry. Mercie beaucoup.

Weird, very understated film about a serial killer in a London. Its depressing but noth without humor - its more like a slice of the killers life (obviously inspired by Dennis Nilsen) rather than a contained story...Well Worth watching.. |

"Ju-on: Old lady in white" 10/10 http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Kasper_76/28.jpg This is simply a must-see for all fans of creepy horror movies. Didn't think it was possible for a horror movie to creep me out anymore. This movie almost did it from beginning to end, just like the first Ju-on, and I was flabbergasted to see this wasn't directed by Shimizu, but again by Ryűta Miyake (the guy behind the MUCH less succesful Ju-on: girl in black). But with this movie he did everything right, that he didn't managed with Girl In Black. I seriously don't believe Shimizu could've done anything better with this movie... You don't get a bigger praise than that from me. You should be very proud Miyake. Every time that old woman showed up..... brrrrrrr.. |

The Exterminator I finally got around to checking out this flick, it was pretty cheesy and not as grity as I had expected. A bit disappointing. 6.5/10 Tideland This didn't really go anywhere. It was weird but not in an interesting way, it just felt like nothing. 4/10 Simon Says This was actually pretty gory, Crispin Glover is just awesome as ever. NOT RETARDED! NOT STUPID! 7/10 |

Alucarda (1978)
A fairly entertaining movie about orphans, nuns, and demon possession. It looks great (director Juan López Moctezuma was a friend and collaborator of Jodorowsky), and has some surprisingly convicted performances, but is overall kind of lacking. |
Dear Frankie
