The Baby's Room
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...0,214,317_.jpg Very creepy and atmospheric. Alex de la Iglesia has a real knack for film making. Check it out on Netflix on demand. |
Source Code: Fairly good movie, but not really my thing. I'm pretty much well done with the slew of whole anti-terrorism, America Fuck Yeah! movies as of late. The ending was also rather weak in my opinion. But it was shot quite well and moved at a good pace. I know that remakes don't really need to follow the original shot by shot, but I really think that they should have at least given Punxsutawney Phil a cameo appearance somewhere.

Laid to Rest
Really getting into horror movie special efx and wanted to see what Robert Hall would do in his first movie as director. Not the best movie but not the worst either. Sub-par plot but i was watching it for the kills and effects, which he did not disappoint in. Enjoyable as a mindless slasher and some good kills. |
Evil Dead II (1987)
Even after all these years, this is stil one of the greatest low budget films ever made. A modern era classic |

SCREAM 3 (2000)
watched it again last night with my ex girlfriend. She liked it a little, it was her first time ever watching this one. I liked it, but it seemed like a comedy and not just a slasher film. Maybe it was because it takes place in Hollywood and it had the same formulas involved as with other early 2000's slasher films that appear to be cheesier than Mac and Cheese. |

Watched Tron last night. IMO it was horrible.

Don't Look Now (1973). The opening scene of Don't Look Now is more than enough to lure any unsuspecting movie sucker into this gripping and atmospheric little thriller. And once it gets going, even as confusing as it is, the wealth of filmatic gold that is presented is more than enough to hold the audience glued to its seat in hopeful angst that some sense will be made out of the discomfiting events that are unraveling.
Yeah, this isn't the most transparent movie ever, but its secretive and confusing ways only work to build up the mystery that is at its core. As it moves forward, and as more and more information is dropped onto our laps, nothing seems right and everyone, suspicious. Even reality as it is presented becomes questionable, but this is the film's puissance. The acting was pretty good. Donald Sutherland was not quite as good as other critics like to suggest. At times he was marvelous, but suddenly he would have this cheesy smile draped over his face that suggested that super glue must have been involved. Julie Christie was fairly solid. The old ladies were creepy good fun and might just get my best performance vote. Others did their part as well, and though this flick might not have enjoyed the best acting ever, the essence of the acting almost in itself elevates it into a class of its own, leaving behind a litany of jealous and scornful wannabes. The direction was spectacular. It is very reminiscent of a stylish giallo flick but with a well thought out story line. Its atmosphere of confusion was splendid, and only a brilliant director could have conjured up such a wonderful piece of work. And kudos for that lovemaking scene. It's been a long time since passion has lit up the silver screen sans an X rating. The photography was amazing. Some of the shots were textbook perfection in what they were eliciting out of the audience. What really worked its magic, though, was that fantastic editing. Scenes are split into twos for what seemed like an effort to confuse the audience at the expense of style, but nothing could be further from the truth as the ending fully revealed what these editing choices were actually trying to impart. In short, they were magnificent on all accounts. The score was perfect as well, whether driving the excitement or emoting the rekindled love of lovers, it hit its mark every time. Don't Look Now is a film not just to be enjoyed at its initial viewing, but one whose awkward essence lingers long after the DVD is popped back into its case, fully cognizant that it will soon be pulled out again and again. d |

Wake Wood (2011)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...eWoodCover.jpg After losing their only child, Alice, in a vicious dog attack, two grieving parents relocate to a small town where — to their horror and fascination — they discover a pagan ritual that will grant them three more days with their deceased daughter. Hoping to allay their sorrow, at least temporarily, the couple decides to go through with the rite, but the larger question remains, what happens after the three days have passed? This isn't a great but decent film that got the little potential in favor of a hope of promising comeback of Hammer Horror. Let Me In was more of a 2nd or US adaptation of an internationally acclaimed novel than a Hammer film and Sir Christopher Lee’s little role even couldn’t able to save The Resident from being so horrible but here Wake Wood comes with an interesting occult plot in an Irish countryside premise with a gloomy mood all over that initially looks promising' but this wasn’t so satisfying experience, specially when it comes close to the end. Overall, it was fairly enjoyable & worth a watch for sure. >>: B The Satanic Rites Of Dracula (1974) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...RofDracula.jpg >>: C+ Psych 9 (2010) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...njidhdc/p9.jpg >>: F |

Hobo with a Shotgun (2011) From its trailer we got the idea that it'd be purely an over the top action-gore extravaganza but what makes HOBO so special & an instant Grindhouse masterpiece that it's got a beautiful heart. I loved it, turned out better than the expectation...what a blast! >>: A- The Warrior's Way (2010) >>: B- Husk (2010) First film of new After Dark originals...result: pretty disappointing. >>: C- Battle: Los Angeles (2011) >>: B 10 Rillington Place (1971) This is a remarkable film adaptation of the case of infamous British serial killer John Christie. The film shows a dangerous manipulative killer hiding behind a bland, mild exterior of an everyday sober English gentleman which showcases a disturbing exploration of evil. The film centers on the case of young and fully dim-witted Timothy Evans (brilliantly played by young John Hurt) who comes to lodge and whose pretty young wife becomes another victim of Christie and this case represented a rare & haunting chapter in the legal system of England. The Christie murders were famous in Britain, and, in fact, historic because of their effect on the elimination of the UK's death penalty. And as a film, based on the true events, it turned out a devastating & sad experience while watching an innocent & helpless man get hanged for the murder of his wife & child and the killer is getting away. Richard Attenborough’s all screen performance as Christie is I think, one of the finest examples to follow in method acting. As a study of the evil mind this is an acting tour de force. Highly Recommended. >>: A |

"Doc West" (2010)
-Terence Hill, Paul Sorvino Plot: DVD Talk The American West. Mysterious cowboy "Doc" West (Terence Hill) has just transferred by wire some serious cash from the Santa Fe post office to one of the finest boarding schools for girls in Boston...right before the post office is robbed by desperados. Unable to give rapid chase because of his horse's split hoof, West tracks the robbers, until he comes upon Silver (Benjamin Petry), a young boy suffering from a dislocated shoulder (his horse threw him and ran off), and a more immediate concern: a rattler moving in for a strike. West carefully draws down on the rattler, and from 300 yards, shoots his tail off...as a warning to the other snakes, he later tells Silver. Utilizing a bit of positive imagery misdirection, West re-sets the boy's arm, causing Silver to suspect that West is not only a hellava shot, but also a physician--a theory West quietly (too quietly) denies. Taking Silver back to his small desert town, Holysand, West immediately makes himself known to the wrong people, including taking vicious henchman Garvey (Alessio Di Clemente) in a poker game. Garvey works for town big wheel Nathan Mitchell (Boots Southerland), who's ruthlessly acquiring farmland for his expanding cattle herd. Sheriff Basehart (Paul Sorvino) locks up West for his own good (after Garvey accuses him of cheating at cards) as much as for the chance to talk to someone interesting for a change. Denise Stark (Clare Carey) isn't a doctor, but she knows one when she sees one, especially after the jailed West gives her the correct prescription for an ailing patient. The arrival of Millie Mitchell (Mary Petruolo), Nathan's daughter, sets into motion a final showdown between her father and farmers the Baker family--with "Doc" West caught right in the middle. Phantoms Review: While it's great to see Terence Hill back in the saddle again, this film is a bit on the dull side. The action is very light and for some reason all of the female actors are terrible. On the plus side, Hill still has that same charm he had back in his spaghetti western days and Paul Sorvino looks like he's having a great time. Also, the film is beautifully shot in New Mexico. If your expecting lots of Spaghetti western style action and violence you'll be disappointed , this is more of a "Family "style western. Not bad, but it could have been so much better. The film did spawn a sequel called "Triggerman" which I'll probably be watching next week. |

Downfall (2004). The magic of Downfall is that it puts the humanity into the monstrosity of Hitler's inner circle. The story's realism is almost painful, making the thugs more cringe-worthy as we see them as fairly normal men, not werewolves or other such mythical beasts.
The story is both riveting and authentic. Downfall is a long movie that covers a short span of time, but it accomplishes this with an expert's eye. It shows us these last days from multiple viewpoints, such as in the opulence of the bunker to the shambles on the front lines. Where it was a little ambitious is in the number of characters that are swirling about on the screen, but this is likely my ignorance of history as opposed a dig of the film. The scary thing about having a plethora of actors and actresses, all with important roles, is that one or two is likely going to suffer from a paucity of talent. But that simply is not the case here and each and every performance deserves rightful accolades. Of course Bruno Ganz almost steals the show with his portrayal of Hitler. This performance portrays the Hitler we have all heard about but with a touch of down to Earth humanity that we wish would just go away. But go away it does not, leaving us to fully experience Hitler the man and not the myth. As the end comes near Bruno delicately ages his character, all the while displaying a fairly lucid character punctuated by berserk outbursts of spoken violence fueled by hatred and psychosis. To mention all of the great performances would take more digital ink than is necessary, but a special mention should be given to Alexandra Maria Lara portrayal of Traudl, Hitler's real-life secretary whose presence in that infamous bunker is the main source for these events. Alexandra is spectacular as the naive young lady whose allegiance to Hitler is out of pride and ignorance. Those doe eyes say everything she must be feeling, especially when present at one of Hitler's rants. Oliver Hirschbiegel's direction was nothing short of brilliant. This was one of the most painfully honest movies told of the Nazi regime, and it was through his deft direction that this 156 minute movie remains captivating throughout. The photography was sublime. with its choice of movement, whether from the shakeup of a bombing or the swirling of a swing dance, the photographer almost effortlessly conveys the subtle presence of every shot. The effects were brutal and effective. When those bombs drop we are compelled to dive out of the way right along with our onscreen protagonists. And those hospital scenes reveled in its displays of the gore of war. In fact, every aspect of Downfall was outstanding. By this movie's finish, instead of just knowing a little more about the last days of the war, you will felt almost as if had lived it, almost to the point that a little inappropriate guilt might have rubbed off. d |

Great entertainment. Over-the-top violence, great use of colour, and some of the most hilariously cringe-worthy lines in a film. |
Desperate Measures - I remember this came out for all of about a week at the cinemas where I lived, though I went to see it. Michael Keatons "villain" here is great to watch, it's a fun movie, a bit over the top but overall I still quite liked it.
Stephen Kings "Desperation". Was "ok". Interesting. I enjoyed it but thought it fell a bit flat towards the end. |
Did an Alien Quadrilogy marathon for the last few nights, but I've moved on to Inception as we speak.

Witnesses (2003). This dark Croatian flick opens with a scene that tells the audience that something special is about to occur. But this something is not wrapped in a sugary coating and then delicately sauteed, but instead is a fresh look at the ubiquitous death of morality that is becoming of civil war.
The story has a simple basis that is heaped with plenty of complexity. Even the story's title increases in significance as its meaning stealthily widens. The timeline is convoluted and wonderful. Just as it becomes almost too complex, a dish of information comes along to reestablish our footing, only to have it knocked out from under us once again. What is notable is this never becomes frustrating, at least once it becomes obvious that the necessary information will soon become available, right when we least expect it. As a subtitled flick, be ready with the rewind button, but don't let this scare ya away, for this dark journey is more than worth the effort. The acting was superb on all accounts. There really is no star here, at least in terms of camera time. Everybody equally applies his or her talent to support this messed up story of a war-torn land whose moral compass is spinning in circles. The direction was simply brilliant. In lesser hands, this would have been a mess of film, a mere exorcise in frustration. But Vinko Bresan reveals his salt and daringly applies his wonderfully artistic flair to this sad tale. The photography was stunning. Long panning shots, wildly subdued color variations, and perfectly distorted angles convey all the right ingredients to bring out the necessary elements just behind the scenes. The score would hauntingly sneaking in here and there to further toy with our emotions, but for the most part it played it ancillary part perfectly. At a mere 124 minutes, this feels like a meatier, but not longer, flick, and by its finish the need to set a little time aside in order to let this one settle in is more than requisite. d |
Just watched "Monsters" on Netflix. Supposed to be scifi, but it was so boring.
